McQ's Restaurant
Well, this isn’t exactly a course review, but part of golf is sitting in the clubhouse after having a bite and something to whet your whistle. If the rest of the golf course is as good as the food and service at McQ’s (not sure where the name comes from) then I’d come back for a round for sure.
My family and I were in the area on a holiday, and were looking for a place to eat on our way back to the Ferry from Kaslo. There aren’t a ton of choices on that stretch of windy road, and I had had a good meal there once before so we decided to give it a try.
The restaurant itself is perched on a steep rise that takes you up a windy road with nicely manicured edges and a fun looking putting course on the side. The parking lot didn’t look too full, and though there was a wedding going on in tents outside, the restaurant staff were happy to have us and our two children in the restaurant. Drinks were served quickly with crayons for the kids.
The meals are more expensive than your average chain restaurant, with entrĂ©es starting at about $16 and going up to almost the $30 mark. That said, in this case the old adage ‘You get what you pay for’ is true. I ordered a Chicken Ceasar that was definitely assembled from scratch; no store-bought dressing to be found. My wife had one of the specials, which was an amazing meal that included an appetizer (Portabello Mushroom stuffed with goat cheese and topped with a berry-balsamic reduction) a prime rib, with beautifully cooked fresh veggies, and a choice of dessert for only $24. It was by far the best deal on the menu, and everything was cooked and presented nicely.
They also offer a very reasonable children’s menu with meals around the $6 mark. The servers were friendly, the setting is lovely, and the windows give a panoramic view of the lake and the Pilot’s Bay Lighthouse across on the East Shore. You can even watch for your ferry coming in and make sure to make it to the dock on time to catch it.
All in all, McQ’s at Balfor Golf Course is a great place to start or end your round of golf. See you on the links!
