Five steps to Perfect Posture
By Golf Etc on April 20, 2009
Five steps to Perfect Posture…next time you’re napping in front of the Golf Channel, check out the spine angle of the amateurs they show versus the golf professionals. Wow, it’s amazing isn’t it! You could run a train down the track along Tiger’s or Lorena’s spine, but check out your weekend partner’s spine on the first tee. If it’s curved like a bow (as in bow & arrow) like a lot of golfers, maybe you want another ball toss for a different partner!
Take a minute and stand at attention in front of a full length mirror – shoulder width apart at your feet, eyes front and shoulders level. Take in the side view (pretty or not!) and note that at this “standing at attention” position, your spine is effectively straight. To move into a golf set up position, tilt from the hips until you feel the weight being supported by the balls of your feet. Next, flex your legs until you feel some tension just above the knees. Third step, while your eyes are still watching your eyes in the mirror, hold your arms out in front of you and clasp your hands together as in prayer, thumbs up. Without losing your gaze from the mirror, let your arms drop until they are hanging loosely from your shoulders. Now, drop your chin just enough so your eyes can now see the top of your thumbs (or where the ball would be). Most golfers when assuming the address position will have curved their spine by step #4 if not step #2, and their instructor would say “Chin up, Seat up!” to correct their spine angle. This five step process will become second nature to you after just a few attempts.
…next week… how your spine angle affects your lie angle… and your accuracy!
